Experience
An Ohio native with deep roots in North Carolina and Tennessee, Jed Portman covered Southern food for both Serious Eats and Garden & Gun magazine, where he was on staff from 2012 to 2017. After a decade and a half away from home, he moved back to Cincinnati in 2019 and launched Midwesterner, a newsletter about food, agriculture, and the American Midwest. He writes stories about place and tradition: an introduction to birch syrup, a tribute to a one-of-a-kind mountain barbecue joint, a guide to cleaning and cooking a raccoon.
Jed has contributed to three of Garden & Gun's bestselling books, "The Southerner's Handbook: A Guide to Living the Good Life》(2013), "The Southerner's Cookbook: Recipes, Wisdom, and Stories" (2015), and "S is for Southern: A Guide to the South, from Absinthe to Zydeco" (2017), and has written for publications ranging from Lucky Peach to Field & Stream.
